Description of the Work

The work represents an excellent example of Lucio Fontana’s graphic production of the mid-1950s. This is a study of stylized figures, drawn with a nervous, rapid and continuous ink line that defines volumes in an almost dynamic and energetic way. The artist seeks not anatomical realism, but the vibration of form in space, a central theme throughout the Spatialist movement he founded.

The use of watercolor is minimal: touches of gray and light blue give depth to the silhouettes, while a patch of bright yellow at the base of the figures draws the eye and anchors the composition. This drawing testifies to how, even on paper, Fontana sought to overcome the two-dimensionality of the support through a sign that appears free to move and occupy the surrounding void. The autograph inscription and signature at the bottom confirm the sheet’s Milanese genesis, during a period of great creative ferment for the master.
