Description of the Work

The work is a vibrant example of Paul Kostabi’s Neo-Expressionist and “Bad Painting” style. A grotesque, primal face stands out in the center of the composition, outlined by a heavy pink outline reminiscent of the aesthetics of graffiti and children’s art. The gaze is magnetic and disturbing: tears or rivulets of paint drip from the wispy blue eyes, giving the subject an air of suffering or psychedelic ecstasy.

The background is an organized chaos of textures and graphic signs: small stylized suns, sketched figures on the left, and a series of rectangular blocks on the right stand out, giving an almost architectural rhythm to the clutter. The palette alternates earthy, burnt tones with bright primary colors, spread with energetic, dirty brushwork. Compared to his brother Mark, Paul Kostabi prefers a more instinctive, raw, punk language, where pure emotion prevails over formal perfection. The artist’s signature is integrated into the composition within black rectangles at the bottom, becoming an integral part of the work’s design.
