Description of the Work

The work presents an aesthetic that recalls Picasso’s interest in applied arts and ceramic decoration. In the center of the composition, against a deep black background, stands a stylized white heart from which soft green vegetal swirls, punctuated by tiny pink flowers, branch out. The design is characterized by a soft, flowing line, almost childlike in its simplicity, conveying a sense of lightness and harmony.

The inner frame, made with a dense grid weave, and the frayed outer edge give the sheet the appearance of a precious embroidery or decorated tile. At this stage of his career, Picasso loved to explore joyful and primal themes, simplifying forms to the point of making them pure graphic signs. The work reflects that desire for a return to spontaneity and nature that characterized many of his productions made in the south of France, far from the tensions of the great historical avant-gardes.
